Rays Sign Daniel Mayora

Per Baseball America

Daniel Mayora is a middle infielder formerly of the Colorado Rockies’ system. He turns 26 in July and has never played above Double-A, here’s what Marc Hulet wrote about him in March, 2009 that seems to still apply:

Mayora is less athletic and lacks the first-step quickness needed to be a stolen-base threat or to play shortstop regularly. He was left unprotected in the Rule 5 draft despite a career .297 average and potential above-average power for a middle infielder.

The Rays also signed Ray Olmedo last week, who spent 2009 with Durham and last season with Milwaukee’s Triple-A team. Odds are that one of, if not both, of those names will stock the Durham infield, along with Chris Carter and Russ Canzler.
